I'm going to explore a small unexplored area on my mountain bike and survey it if possible. 1.70 miles out I'm at a local summit. 11:46 AM. I stop here for lunch. Coordinates 32 41.42 N 116 49.09 W. 11:58 I resume my journey. 2.32 Turning into the road toward the Spring. 2.71 41-88-49-28 The place where I turned around before. I have to cross a puddle in order to continue. 90-28 2.73 The trail again widens into a road. 92-28 95-29 97-27 99-24 0-21 5-16 7-14 10-11 14-8 3.10 Sign facing the other direction for boundary of state wildlife area, and there is a crude map. Just beyond that, 16-7, the trail splits. I take the left branch. 18-5 This appears to be the larger branch. 19-5! The trail splits again. The right branch seems to go nowhere. The left branch appears to go up a hill, and is becoming overgrown. End of this part. I turn around. Mileage at turnaround 3.19. Back at the previous split [16-7]. I turn left. 17-4 It appears that this was not the smaller branch. In fact, it appears to be following the old roadbed. 20-1 22-98 23-96 23-93 22-90 21-87 19-85 20-83 24-83 Tire tracks and manure on this trail show that it is used. 25-83 27-81 30-80 32-79 42-36-48-74 I come to a T on what I believe is the California Riding and Hiking Trail. I turn right to go back to Hollenbeck Canyon. 30-74 25-71 19-68 18-67 15-68 13-70 11-72 9-73 7-78 Side trail to the right. I turn right. 7-79 6-81 The trail appears to run along the boundary fence for the wildlife preserve. 5-83 It goes through a hole torn in that fence. 4-82 3-80 Junction 2. I am back on the main road, and I turn left. 4-78 5-78 Locked gate across the road [at the boundary of the Wildlife Preserve]. Unlocked equestrian pipe gate just to the right of it. Back at the place where I turned right [7-78!]. End of this part. I turn around. I pass Junction 2 [3-80], which is scarcely visible from this side, and I continue. 3-81 1-85 99-86 94-87 90-88 88-88 87-89 87-92 82-95 79-99 77-0 75-98 74-98 71-0 69-99 Top of extremely steep single track to the right. 66-99 41-64-48-92 Side road or trail to the left. I turn left. [It appears that it used to be a road, but a deep gully eroded in the left side caused it to shrink to a single track.] 65-91 66-89 This trail is steep, but it's not slip-slide steep! 67--66 [?] 68-84 70-81 41-71-48-80! No-hunting-past-this-point sign and a boundary-state-wildlife-area sign. End of this part. I go back. Back at the place where I turned left [41-64-48-92]. I continue on the road. 64-96 63-98 65-2 65-5 The other end of that extremely steep single track. [Draw line to top at 69-99! and then resume drawing at 65-5.] 63-11 41-60-49-15! Junction. End of this part. I turn left to go more or less directly back to the parking area. 48-11 Possible older alignment of this road to the left [which I saw clearly from a higher vantage point on the road]. I'm surveying this road so I can compare it on the topo to see if that is the case. 42-9 39-7 37-8 35-7 33-5-" " Possible other end of old alignment, or possible not. Maybe this road is just running close to the old alignment. 28-3 24-2 41-20-48-99! Junction. I'm going to turn left and stop surveying. I'm just looking for a possible other end to that old alignment. 41-39-48-96 It might have been here, although if so, it's completely overgrown. I turn back. [Draw line to 39-97!] 41-18-49-3 What looks like the remains of a house. [Draw line to 18-4!] 1:43 PM Back at the parking area. End of this part of trip. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Survey of Hollenbeck Canyon December 9, 2003 8:27 AM, I'm at the parking lot on Honey Springs Road for Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area. I turn sharp right [into a side road]. 65-46 70-41 Through a gap in a fence. To my right, approximately at a right angle to the road, to my left, approximately parallel to the road. Signs on the fence say "Boundary State Wildlife Area". 72-39 77-36 79-35 82-37 83-35 83-32 84-31 87-30 A rusty tank to my left, perched on some boulders. It's probably about 10 feet long, three feet high and two feet wide. A pipe coming out of it ang going down into the canyon [and running near the road in one place]. 41-88-49-28! End of road, and apparenlty the end of the trail, although a crude path may continue. End of this part. I turn around. Mileage as I turn around is 0.97, time is 9:45 AM. Back at the junction [41-63-49-48], I continue on the main road. 64-54 64-58 A tree fallen in the road. I have to go around it. 66-66 66-70 Through a gap in a fence with an open gate. It's a large ditch following the contour of the hillside. Just after the ditch, the road passes through a gap in a fence. 26-14 26-12 26-6 27-2 26-97 25-93 22-88 20-86 41-18-49-84 T junction.
