survey of 47th St, Pepper and Manzanita Canyons July 14, 2012 8:40 AM leaving home at 0.0 miles [on my mountain bike] I'm going to survey some of the open spaces in the Azalea Park area N 32 44.214 W 117 5.785 entrance to Swan Canyon on stub of Quince St at Chamoune [44-214-5-785] SB Chamoune jogs W here about one street width and continues S access to Swan Canyon at S end 179-804! I'm going to measure the distance on my bicycle odometer, starting here at 3.28 end at 3.32 [at stub of Quince St] N on Chamoune, then E on Redwood Menlo & Redwood, the open space comes right to the road here, but there is a do-not-enter sign on it [47th Street Canyon] N on Menlo, E on Thorn, there is signed access [to 47th Street Canyon] at 47th & Thorn 44-419-5-632 I enter the canyon and follow a crude trail going N there is a locked gate on the N side of Thorn, probably, this is automobile access to the canyon [possibly a long time ago, the road is now not passable in a car] 472-636 a painted manhole structure and somewhat confusing trails after a difficult crossing over a dry creek, I come to a more obvious trail or road on the other side 484-635 I turn L and head up the canyon 501-641 trail splits, and I turn L to go down into the canyon I immediately come back to the split and check out the trail in the other direction 512-652 a trail sign here, but the trail access is up a hill [next to a large pipe] I cable my bike to the sign and head uphill on foot 44-537-5-635! unsigned canyon access at the S end of an alley, end of this part, I turn around [it is probably the alley between Menlo & 47th] back at the split [501-641], I go the other way and head up the center of the canyon 506-658 512-661 532-680 533-690 very steep path to the W, apparently going up to the end of a street, I continue up the canyon 544-703! path peters out as the canyon to the N is clogged with vegetation, end of this part, I turn around there is at least crude informal access here to the end of a cul-de-sac or alley [to the E or NE] I turn R into that steep trail to the W [533-690] 44-525-5-704! it was quite a struggle, but I finally get my bike up to an unsigned canyon entry point on Menlo Ave and another street I go W about 1/2 block to 46th St, and this is Myrtle Ave 47th & Dwight there is canyon access here and a very steep, rugged trails going up the canyon to a little stub of Dwight St on Euclid Ave, I do not enter the canyon here, I go farther N Landis St goes through, and the canyon does not touch it apparent canyon access at curve in Roselawn Ave, or maybe that's just a vacant lot Dwight crosses the canyon in what appears to be an isolated part of the canyon that may not be part of the open space unsigned access on the W side of 47th at Myrtle, it appears to be very close to the alley access that I encountered earlier 44--481--5--607 signed, but very steep access at S end of this part of 47th St 44--457--5--544 canyon touches Euclid Ave, but there are no paths to this point, not even very steep ones 44-295-5-544 signed and gated access from W side of Euclid Ave just N of business district I enter the canyon and go roughly N 317-547 319-548 350-573 368-585 406-593 432-602 441-603 481-632 very steep, rough trail to my R 480-630 previously encountered trail junction at or near this place [it was at 484-635!], end of this part, I turn around [I leave the canyon by the same route and then ride down to Home Ave] NB on 47th St from Home Ave it appears that the gap in 47th St is not part of the canyon but merely a very steep embankment there's a fence at the top, it's not clear that there's a way through [I go back down to Home Ave and then N on Menlo Ave] canyon sign at Quince and 47th, but no trails the S end of 47th just S of Quince is at 6.79 miles [I ride N on 47th St] 6.84 miles at Quince St 44-153-6-227 on Poplar St at Jamie's Way entering Hollywood Trail in Pepper Canyon trail on E side of canyon just goes to a nearby alley, I go down the W side of the canyon W side entrance at 148-239 and it's nearly opposite Jamie's Way 135-225 alley access R and L 103-203 I cross a street [Pepper Dr] and enter another part of the trail, also on the W side 90-178 alley access to R 44-73-6-159 street access R [Sycamore Dr], chairs, landscaping and a stairway going down into the canyon no path continuation on this side of the canyon, so I go down the stairway 78-151 83-148 bottom of stairway, a bridge across the dry creek, and a path going down the middle of the canyon, I go down that path there is also a mulched path up to the street [Sumac Dr] on the other side of the canyon, and that's probably an alternate route, usable when the canyon is flooded 76-140 58-140 22-135 4-147 973-159 954-148 trail ends in Hollywood Park, and there are some signs I took the trail that emerged at the "0 mile" sign, and it was probably not the easiest trail I ride around the edge of the park, looking for alternate access 938-195 pretty solid 8-foot fence to my R 921-219 897-249 open gate to my R, possible access, I continue along periphery 827-293 770-305 I turn L to get the coordinates of the center of the parking lot center of parking lot at 43-772-6-286! I turn around and resume my survey of the edge of the park [770-305] 744-319 723-293 699-257! corner of park, no signs of access, end of this part 43-897-6-247 I go through that open gate 903-261 919-275 a rough T intersection, I go L 43-900-6-315! trail emerges on a street near its end, between 2525 and 2535 I turn R and follow the street first intersection is with Sycamore Dr, and this is Violet St I check the end of Tuberose St and find the other end of that path, and it is signed for Hollywood Park, so it is a legal entrance I follow and alley parallel to violet, directly into the native plant garden [in Azalea Community Park] 43-950-6-595 near the other end of the park, I pick up the trail into Manzanita Canyon 953-604 965-618 976-636 20-656 75-609 103-562 139-505 147-495 44-160-6-480 manhole MH34 and small trail up side canyon to L 180-473 205-419 44-211-6-401 side trail to L, I turn L 229-389 242-389 292-427 very steep and rough trail up to street or alley to my R [probably 41st or Redwood] 306-448 44-306-6-494! trail emerges at Central and Redwood, there is a gate here, I think the trail is an access road, end of this part, I turn around back at jucntion [44-211-6-401], I turn L a little side path to the L of the creek bed, which is very pebbly 222-358 232-344 44-240-6-320 side path R, I turn R 228-320 T intersection with mulched path, I turn L lost satellite reception regained satellite reception 219-306, small side path L, I keep R to follow mulched path 214-303 44-194-6-292! trail emerges at signed trailhead at Manzanita & Jamies, end of this part, I turn around I pass the small side trail and go back down into the canyon I come to the T [228-320] and continue SA on the mulched path 44-329-6-341 T intersection at main, cobbly road, and little path going over to the side path that I didn't notice before, I turn R and continue up the canyon 241--321 place where I turned R, I continue up the canyon on the path [change to 44-240-6-320 to match previous reading] 250-317 steep path up hill to L, possibly canyon access I rejoin the road 44-262-6-302 side path to R, possibly the other end of that path that I did not take 286-268 308-251 314-234 333-208 short, steep path L, I [leave my bike and] turn L 44-347-6-205! access at end of a cul-de-sac [Van Dyke Ave], end of this part, I turn around back on main road [333-208], I continue up the canyon 369-186 44-409-6-151! trail ends on a street [43rd & Thorn], with a gate, end of this part W on Thorn and S on Van Dyke, and I find that this is the canyon entrance that I noted, there is no [canyon] sign on it [there is a no-dumping sign] there may be a side trail to Thorn and 42nd that I didn't notice 1:09 PM back home, total miles 14.1 [according to GPS]
