On January 16, 2011, I participated in a hike to the Morena Butte sponsored by the Take a Hike group on meetup.com. The hike followed the route described in Jerry Schad's Afoot & Afield in San Diego County.

I'd never been there before, and neither had the hike leader. However, a few participants had done the hike before, and their directions proved to be invaluable.

Most of the hike to Morena Butte goes along the Pacific Crest Trail, which I had hiked before. However, the current location of the Pacific Crest Trail is not the same as the route shown on the topo, which was last updated in 1980. In fact, the old route did not run next to Morena Butte, as the current route does.

The trail from the Pacific Crest Trail up to one of the summits of Morena Butte is obviously a social trail. It is quite steep in some places and a little vague in others. However, it is adequately marked by ducks (small piles of stones) and a ribbon or two.
