On March 11, 2010, I led an Outdoors Club hike up Monserate Mountain, following the description in Jerry Schad's Afoot & Afield in San Diego County.

I followed some of the side trails mentioned in Schad's description.

It appears that all, or nearly all, of the trails are the remains of old roads. Only the trail from the last junction to the summit does not appear to be a road.

There are no signs prohibiting mountain bikes, and I saw what appeared to be mountain bike tire tracks in a few places.

Most of the trails were shown on aerial photographs, which are overlaid over the topo.

Notice that the topo does not show Interstate 15, Stewart Canyon Rd. or Pankey Rd. Presumably these roads were built after the topo was surveyed.

One of the gates appears to be on a section line.
