Survey of Lakeside Linkage Preserve August 24, 2009 corner of Los Coches Rd and Los Coches Ct in Lakeside I'm going to survey the Lakeside Linkage Preserve trailhead on Los Coches Rd N 32 50.535 W 116 54.919 [50-535-54-919] mileage 0.08, time 7:32 AM [I enter the preserve and follow the trail on foot] 553-852 565-832 trail splits, official sign says the trail goes R, so I go R 560-827 547-821 533-836 the trail went along a hillside with some pretty good views of Los Coches Rd 508-852 494-852 this part of the trail is steep and it has small switchbacks, it is not suitable for mountain biking 498-840 508-829 social trail to L going to some kind of cyclindrical sturcture, I turn L 516-825! cyclindrical structure, end of this part, I turn around back on main trail [508-829], I turn L to continue 501-824 505-812 views from this part of the trail are quite good 507-802 514-790 513-781 0.37 miles, a rocky area with good views 521-771 social trails L and R 536-758 sharp right is a sizable trail that I may want to check out on the way back [I didn't] 555-749 this appears to be a mountain bike play area 581-758 593-735 625-695 a side trail to R 50-687-54-651-A the trail emerges on a dirt road, official signs indicate that this trail continues to the L, therefore I turn L [I later thought this was the trailhead on Manajo Rd, but GPS readings show that the trailhead was S of this point, no wonder I missed it] 700-657 713-657 726-647 the road continues, apparently for access to some power lines, but the trail turns L, as marked by an official sign I can see that the part of this road not taken goes directly down to Ha-Hana Rd just W of Mnanjo Rd I turn L to follow the trail 732-656 738-662 great views, this is probably near the highest point on the trail 749-658 769-656 from this point to the next reading is probably the highest part of the trail 785-669 804-680 831-678 865-691 899-695 a large open space to my R, does not appear to be used as a social trail I follow the obvious trail to the L 904-708 trail descends steeply, off to the R is a social trail running along a fence, on the other side of the fence is a rather elegant residence 925-725 trail here runs along a saddle lengthwise to another hill 941-771 955-809 50-968-54-835 T junction, the official signs say the trail goes R, I turn L 942-827! trail ends at a rock with a very good view of the houses below, end of this part, I turn around back at the junction [50-968-54-835], I go SA to continue on the main trail 980-841 another little rocky view point to the L, I turn L 986-855! a pile of rocks, end of this part, I turn aroung back at the main trail [980-841], I turn L to continue 985-834 994-836 4-851 11-837 19-825 51-829 51-64-54-845 a signed trailhead on a very narrow paved road going up the hill ahead [it is the access road for the Whitaker House] the trail turns sharp L, it's a well-beaten path, so I turn L [actually, L is a side trail, the main trail goes slightly L roughly parallel to the road] 48-875 42-888 possible social trail to R 23-916 8-933 a fence to my R, this may be one of the places where the pictures in the official brochure were taken [probably not] the fence is apparently concrete moulded and painted to look like wood 50-984-54-962-B an equestrian gate with a trail rules sign next to it 50-991-54-977-C the trail emerges on a paved road between two rust-colored bollards mileage here is 1.50 there are no trail signs here, and no obvious trail continuation, I turn L and go toward Los Coches Rd 1.58 miles, 978-63! first intersection, this is West Rim Rd, L and R are Los Coches Rd, end of this part, I turn around and look for the continuation trail which is shown on the official map 1.65 miles, I re-enter the trail and go back the way I came 1.75 miles and 44--891, I turn L into what I took for a social trail 55--919 I come to what looks like a private residence, I look around and find no obvious continuation, end of this part, I turn around 1.86 miles back on the main trail, I turn L 1.92 miles, back at the signed trailhead [51-64-54-845], I take another beaten path which went only slightly L when I first entered this area 73-863 88-870 94-887 yes, this is definitely a constructed trail, with rocks placed along the edges to mark it 104-888 122-887 137-887 some flag-flying structures to my R, none looks like an old ranch house 151-888 a short stairway to the R, I turn R 51-164-54-881! a small parking area, and there are signs around that say Whitaker I stop to rest and look around and take some pictures I go back to the stairway and continue on what looks like part of the trail 189--897 trail kind of peters out, there's a great view of the lake and downtown Lakeside mileage here is 2.14 end of this part I start from the small parking area [51-164-54-881] and walk down the small access road 152-866 135-860 106-866 86-864 80-851 I am opposite that trailhead, I continue on the access road to see where it emerges 130-828-gate I come to an open gate and a leashed-dogs sign the house number 12835 is on the gatepost [it is probably the number of the Whitaker House] this road is very smooth and hard-packed, but barely paved 202-831 pavement begins to my R is a house number 12870 234-826 road junction, signed as 12892 SA, 12835 back the way I came, nothing L, I turn R 251-817 282-834 298-864 51-292-54-925-D first intersection, this is Castle Court Dr, R is Caraway [sp] St, nothing to L, I continue SA on this street 260-135 2.85 miles, L on Los Coches Rd [I walk along the sidewalk on the E side of Los Coches Rd] 194-126 134-114 Casa Vista Rd to L 102-107 26-81 Antelope Hills Dr to L, a private drive there are side streets to my R on the other side, but I'm not calling them 976--65 West Rim Rd to L [change to 978-63 to match previous reading] 833-16 Shayann [sp] Ln to L, and it's private 769-998 Rodeo Dr to L 742-987 Cochera [sp] Rd to L 609-943 Meseta [sp] Ln to L 549-925 Los Coches Ct R, where I parked 3.70 miles 9:38 AM, back at the trailhead where I began [50-535-54-919!], end of this part [I explored some streets in the truck, using the GPS to get lat/lon] [I started on Lakeview Rd just N of Ha-Hana Rd, I went S on Lakeview Rd, then W on Ha-Hana Rd, then N on Manajo Rd to its end, I turned around and picked up the E end of Manajo Way, then surveyed Ha-Hana Rd from Manajo Rd to Los Coches Rd] from the GPS: 50--583--54--223 483--266 460--373 462--400 512--452 524--483 517--534 513--565 516--597 513--625 561--637 598--635 612--632 613--598 562--572 430--846 modified for plotting: 50-583-54-223 483-266 460-373 462-400 512-452 524-483 517-534 513-565 516-597 513-625 561-637 598-635 612-632 613-598! [561-637] 562-572! [513-625] 430-846! just E of preserve where the trail emerged on a dirt road, there is a signed trailhead, I have explored it and the streets in the area in my truck and in the GPS a small side street going to the E is Manajo [sp] Way the N-S street running along the E side of the preserve is Manajo [sp] Rd it goes down S as far as Ha-Hana [sp] Rd, and so does the trail
