Survey of Chollas Creek/Radio/Emerald Hills Open Space Preserves August 13, 2009 setting out from home on my mountain bike to explore Emerald Hills Canyon time now 9:50 AM, mileage 0.01 [on GPS] N 32 43.305 W 117 4.792 EB on Federal Blvd [43-305-4-792] 319-778 372-746 bus stops for 917 on the L and 916 on the R 445-676 472-629 R on Bayview Hieghts Way, which will become Kelton Rd [where it crosses C-94] 43-396-4-539 L into bike path signed as Chollas Creek Open Space 407-533 451-495 480-459-palms petite palms to my L 512-416 521-405 580-320 627-214 path emerges on Federal Blvd, I keep R and ride on the sidewalk 43-625-4-154 6.32 miles, R into a signed trail for Chollas Creek Open Space 611-153 585-201 574-218 557-265 499-375 482-404 439-438 410-465-"" trail narrows 409-468 405-476 the trail here is so narrow and rough that I have to dismount 397-477 388-480 remains of some asphalt pavement here 375-471 371-447 trail seems to be following the remains of the pavement 359-428 359-429 347-435 349-452 342-471 320-511 wooden steps up to the L, to the R is a very steep informal path down to Kelton Rd 310-514 top of the steps and no definite trail up here, but there is a trail sign for Chollas Radio Open Space I go across a level area to a locked gate with a gap in the fence next to it 43-288-4-510 L onto the access road for Emerald Hills Neighborhood Park mileage here is 6.93 I go around the park clockwise, skirting the apparent edge 313-447 312-420 328-407 334-381 366-347 350-335 I emerge on a residental street [Tooley St] and turn R 338-352-" " street ends 313-345 301-372 fenced off radio tower field to my L 252-373 251-390 cul-de-sac [Old Memory Lane] to my L, there is a gap in the fence next to a sidewalk on the cul-de-sac and a paved park path leading to it 250-398 247-400 the park access spoken of earlier on the other side of the cul-de-sac is the road access to the radio towers, it is fenced and there is a [presumably locked] gate across the access road 236-482 252-470 292-481! place where I entered the park, end of this part, I stop to rest and eat my lunch I go down the access road to Kelton Rd, where the access road is signed as Bethune Ct on the other side of Kelton Rd is a little cul-de-sac signed as Kelton Place 43-276-4-531 I turn L onto Kelton Rd 228-546 R on Zircon [sp] St Amethyst [sp] St to to L 43-236-4-617 street ends and I enter a signed path for Chollas Creek Open Space 225-622 218-647 trail to L, I go SA top go around what appears to be a loop 218-696 fork A, I keep R 219-722 214-747 fork B, I keep R 182-760! trail kind of peters out, although rough social trails may continue, end of this part, I turn around fork B [214-747], I turn R and follow the well-beaten path 198-739 186-729 side trail to L which connects directly to fork A, I continue on the main trail [draw line to fork A at 218-696! and then start again here 186-729] 194-680 204-648 fork C, I take the L fork 208-640 214--639 previously surveyed junction, end of this part, I turn around [change to 218-647! to match previous reading] back at fork C [204-648], I go the other way 167-632 143-612 131-607 129-606 127-589 I can't find the mapped trails here, but I'm following a well-beaten path 125-585 dry stream crossing 103-580 98-580 T intersection with a very steep road with automobile tire tracks on it, I turn L 89-551 another T intersection, I turn L 105-554! the trail splits and kind of peters out, end of this part, I turn around back at the intersection [89-551], I go SA 58-541 43-24-4-551-" " the trail emerges at the end of a cul-de-sac [56th St], there are no trail signs, but there are no-smoking and no-dumping signs I continue SA on the street 948-550 first intersection, this is 56th St, I turn L on Roswell [sp] St 962-500 L on Kelton Rd Luber [sp] St to the R 121-494 136-500 179-528! map shows trailhead to L, I cross over to check it out yes there is a trail, but no signed I enter it at 164--537 156--546 fork F, apparently as shown on the map, I keep R the trail peters out near the end of a cul-de-sac 157-585 I enter the cul-de-sac in what appears to be a drainage ditch there is a fence here, and a gate, but the trails behind it only vaguely resemble what's on the map at fork F I should have taken the L however, there is a trail down to the other one which is on the map I go back to the cul-de-sac anc follow that 189-601 223-601! first intersection, this is Amethyst St, cross street is Zircon St, end of this part [I ride through the park, along Tooley St, and turn R on 60th St. I notice that the radio towers are fenced off.] the junction of Old Memory Lane, 60th St and Gravity Way, sign for Chollas Radio Canyon Open Space, coordinates here 43-199-4-100 I follow a trail that appears to be an extension of Gravity Way 178-106 end of Gravity Way, I enter the trail 167-106 161-101 126-109 100-102 79-98 38-117 junction, I turn sharp L 51-86! trail emerges at a signed trailhead for Chollas Radio Canyon Open Space at corner of 60th St and Weaver St, end of this part, I turn around back at the junction [38-117], I continue the other way confusing trail split at 14-131, I continue on the more beaten path 6-141 971-153 959-168 42-936-4-179-junction junction of trails, actually dirt roads, 4X4 pickup truck here, apparently park or sewer maintenance, I continue SA and go down the canyon [I surmise that L goes to 60th St near Radio Dr] 892-217 833-269 781-297 734-314 716-317 701-319-" " and open space sign pointing in the opposite direction, this must be an access point 645-326-gate I go around a locked gate I continue on a dirt road 602-316! first intersection, this is Radio Dr, cross street is Market St I turn R 42--607--4--516 more of Chollas Radio Canyon Open Space to my R R on Euclid Ave and end of this part 1:29 PM 17.63 miles, back home, end of trip
