Survey of Lusardi Preserve August 6, 2009 N 33 0.863 W 117 9.724 at the entrance to Lusardi Preserve on Rio Vista Rd [0-863-9-724] 0.00 proceeding to the view point on my mountain bike 848-727 826-780 this is probably the view point, but the road continues 769-933 763-990 762-36 0-739-10-73! the road kind of peters out here at a good view point distance is 0.50 miles I take some pictures and then turn around, end of this part back at the entrance [0-863-9-724], I turn L on Rio Vista Rd to find another mapped trail 0-872-9-743 I enter another mapped trail near a turn in Rio Vista Rd, it's apparently not as well traveled mileage here is 0.96 869-777 875-799 878-871 to my R on the other side of an arroyo is what looks like a palm tree farm 876-925 the trail gets pretty rough, so I get off and walk 848-995 854-58 0-870-10-148 1.38 miles, the trail emerges on a dirt road running under some power lines, and there are some preserve signs around [the road is not signed, but it is shown as Avenida de Pompeii in the Thomas Guide] I turn L 845-143 fork in the road, I keep R 831-155 814-188 805-175 this is an access road for some power lines that are probably on the topo 815-153 819-154 829-142 back at the fork [845-143!], I keep R and go back to the trailhead I pass the trailhead to my R [0-870-10-148], and I continue on the road 922-147 941-145 27-145 73-158 1-97-10-151 this road emerges on Artesian Rd, it is signed as a private road, across the street is what appears to be a portion of the Coast to Crest Trail that I did not explore on the Del Dios Gorge hike I continue SA to survey it 115-152 138-170-gate a locked gate with a rather well-worn double track bypassing it 158-163 187-147 276-151 316-141 339-144! a trail junction that I visited before [on the Del Dios Gorge hike], end of this part there is no longer any trail closure sign here I find four golf balls on the ground near the tower [for the power lines], one is quite old and weathered, the other three appear wuite new [odd, because there is no golf course nearby] mileage here 2.16 I turn around and go back the way I came 2.45 miles back at Artesian Rd [1-97-10-151], I turn L 89-3 92-846 1-92-9-743 2.80 miles, I turn R on Rio Vista Rd 24-739 back where I entered the second trail [0-872-9-743!], end of this part I enter the preserve where I entered the first trail [0-863-9-724], mileage here is 3.10, I enter the third trail, which goes down into the canyon 858-679 840-678 814-701-gate I go around a locked gate [with a horse gate next to it and a worn path next to that] 745-780 705-854 635-940 0-605-9-991 3.55 miles, fork in the road, I take the L fork 605-29 little road to R leading to the other fork, it's blocked off with branches and a rock to my L this road crosses a stream [Lusardi Creek] 602-42-stream I cross the stream [on steppping stones] 591-51 591-74 623-163 613-182 591-183 544-177 510-159 side road to L up to a local summit [this area has a lot of small side roads for access to power line towers] I keep R to stay on the main road 492-164 455-184 434--489--gate I go around a locked gate with some preserve signs next to it [error - correct value probably 434-189-gate ] mileage here 4.00 415-184 364--483 [error - correct value probably 364-183] [There is a fenced-in community to my R, probably part of Fairbanks Ranch] side road here with stones aligned along the edge, I'll have to check it out on the way back 316-188 290-173-gate I go around a locked gate 0-271-10-182! 4.21 miles, I'm on the main road from Santa Luz to Fairbanks Ranch [San Dieguito Rd], across the street is another gated dirt road [apparently for power line access], and the gate has the number 19 on it, end of this part, I go back the way I came I turn R into the side road noted previously 341--128 I come to what are obviously some building lots, this area is going to be built up, end of this part, I turn around I turn R and continue back down into Lusardi Canyon back at the fork [0-605-9-991] I turn sharp L and go DS 618-14 622-41 mileage at the fork was roughly 4.97 633-99 652-129 677-156 676-177-stream stream crossing, but this one has an intact culvert 676-182 690-226-stream stream crossing with an intact culvert 709-256 737-278 0-745-10-294 5.29 miles, I ride around a locked gate with no signs near it 756-310 774-354 839-405 0-859-10-424 I go around a locked gate and onto Artesian Rd the road I was on is signed rather confusingly as both an open space preserve and a private road I turn L to check out the connection to Zumaque 835-427 805-422 743-421 733-428 698-484 657-501 656-516 673-589 0-724-10-617!
