Survey of Azalea Glen Loop July 23,2009 8:32 AM day-use parking area at Paso Picacho Campground in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park I'm going to explore and map some nearby trails N 32 57.558 W 116 34.824 0.02 miles, starting from nearby trailhead for Paso Picacho Loop and Azalea Glen Loop [57-558-34-824] I'm following the small trail into the campground 543-839 533-850 trail emerges on paved road, I turn R to follow the road 529-867 road junction shown on both the topo and the trail map, I turn R 545-882 565-899 586-933 591-956 581-970 junction, road merges with this one from L 571-4 fork in the road, I keep R 551-39 57-498-35-89 previously encountered trailhead near campsite 78, I follow the connector to Azalea Glen Rd 0.35 miles 481-88 475-114 this is the remains of an old FR, but it's so dilapidated that it probably should be shown as a trail 456-139 450-164 the trail splits, L side is closed, I keep R to obey the stay-on-trail sign 455-179 455-204 445-245 436-258 428-262 406-255 394-257 57-374-35-283! T intersection with Azalea Glen Rd, I turn R and stop calling lat/lon 0.64 miles 57-519-35-474 Azalea Glen Trail to R, 0.93 miles, I continue SA 540-477 561-490 579-507 586-575 579-616 565-639 541-665 523-684 503-716 491-745 517-765 this part here is kind of overgrown 575-841 590-876 I've now left the badly overgrown area 595-900 591-924 594-959 57-605-35-973 1.53 miles T intersection with Azalea Springs FR, I turn R 57-633-35-967 Azalea Spring, I stop here for rest and rehydration 632-942 57-641-35-915 1.68 miles, Azalea Glen Trail R, I turn R 643-901 634-896 626-873 626-847 639-824 the trail shows signs of heavy use and erosion 659-805 664-815 683-831 703-829 711-854 725-857 switchbacks too small to be shown on map 732-868 768-863 812-860 840-858 833-834 826-808 823-773 802-753 809-733 828-730 826-738 837-739 the trail is a little wet here, it may be a stream crossing, or more likely the trail is going parallel to a stream and close to it 878-757 880-757 another wet spot I can hear running water to my L 898-750 the chaparral is so tall here that the trail is nicely shaded 935-754 954-747 959-738 972-727 976-724 986-709 994-677 the area ahead has some unburned pine trees I can see and hear a stream to my L 57-996-35-653-forested this is a forested area with many unburned pines, the stream is close to my left and accessible, this is a pleasant place to stop [but I did not stop] 12-610 22-584 21-554 the trail is turning away from the stream, but there is still a goodly amount of shade 23-505 hills to my R and L make the GPS readings slow and inaccurate 37-483 about there the trail emerges from the shaded area 38-445 23-414 17-377 9-350 the trail goes through a clearing [apparently as shown on topo] 994-335 949-326 922-311 about here the clearing ends 894-334 849-349-"stream crossing" 845-348 57-849-35-323-split the trail splits, Azalea Glen Trail goes off to the R, California Riding & Hiking Trail off to the L, no bicycles on the trail that I was on, bicycles allowed to L and R, no horses to R, 3.09 miles, I take the L fork I believe I surveyed this trail on my mountain bike 885-259 888-245 883-233 875-229-"stream crossing" 876-208 897-188 57-899-35-171-sign isolated trail sign at remains of a trail to the R, now closed mileage here 3.26 this may be the connector to the group camp on the map I go a little farther to determine whether that is possibly the case 907-135! since this trail has been previously surveyed, I stop calling lat/lon 57--874--35--28 temporarily closed trail to R, it apparently leads to the group camp,I can see a building from here I continue, find no alternate trails, and at 3.51 I turn around 57-873-35-18 I turn L into what appears to be trail around that closed area it has a scorched trail sign on it 57-827-35-23-" " I come to some rest rooms and showers at the end of a paved road, obviously part of the group camp I follow the paved road back to civilization 814-19 783-7 middle of a large, paved parking area 770-2 785-984 796-962 781-937 764-935 742-920 729-904 712-899 57-681-34-861 slanted T intersection as shown on the maps, locked gate on this road, I keep R to take the shortest route back to the day use area 667-857 unpaved road to R to Campfire Center, I turn R 661-870 57-655-34-888! campfire center, a small ampitheatre, end of this part, I turn around back on the paved road [667-857], I turn R 633-810! I enter the parking area for the picnic ground, end of this part, I take a rest and eat my lunch, 4.05 miles 57-731-34-827 I enter the Nature Trail 738-804 769-812 794-824 831-848 833-855 815-878 806-883 797-880 781-883 762-880 741-869 716-881 694-873 57-685-34-861! trail emerges very close to a road junction noted earlier, end of this part 57-418-35-7 I'm across from campsite 69 and going into a trail next to the Cedar and Coulter Cabins I'm entering a signed connector trail [on trail map] 396-11! trail emerges on Lookout FR, I turn R and stop calling lat/lon L into West Side Trail I come to the connector trail and wait for my GPS to catch the signal 57-260-35-24 I turn L into the connector trail 5.40 miles 268-27 the trail is so ovegrown here that there is what appears to be an informal bypass 279-19 a large log has fallen across the trail, I have to climb over it 287-7 286-980 289-954 278-933 286-894 290-881 303-867 318-858 341-829 381-794 398-793 57-423-34-801! trail emerges on Lookout FR, end of this part this place is very close to campsite 7 I walk through that campsite [which was unoccupied] and through the campground back to the parking area I now enter the trailhead near the parking area to follow the Paso Picacho Loop Trail I've already surveyed the first part 6.22 miles fork in the trail, I turn R for the Paso Picacho Loop Trail, 57-646-35-17 689-15 711-14 724-22 738-39 738-82-bridge long, curved, wooden bridge 739-92 the group campground is to my R, but there is no side trail to it 779-92 802-99 819-148 838-178 839-194 822-225 808-241 771-245 57-745-35-240! junction with Azalea Glen Loop Trail, there's a bench here, I've already surveyed this junction and the other trails, end of this part, I take a rest, and then I go back along Azalea Glen Loop Trail, 6.70 miles I return to the trailhead at 12:39 PM 7.22 miles
