survey of Sweetwater River Trail June 5, 2008 1:36 PM corner of San Miguel Rd and Bonita Ranch Ct 32 40.51 N 117 0.81 W [40-51-0-81] heading E on San Miguel Rd on my mountain bike 51-79 Ames Ranch Trail to my R, and a street to my L [Amadita Ln] 40-68-0-21 Arroyo Rd to my R, athletic field for the Sweetwater Little League to my L 72-5-"Proctor Valley Rd" Proctor Valley Rd to my R 73-0 75-97 77-95 81-92 88-88 L on Summit Meadow Rd 92-90 94-92 93-96 riding and hiking trail to my L 95-0 99-2 1-4 1-11 trail to my R 3-14 99-18 93-17 87-17 85-16 86-12 94-12 99-18 previously encountered intersection, I turn R 0-17 I turn R toward the exit 99-12 I turn R into the day use area 97-12 94-10 91-9 91-7 a closed trail to my R, it was probably cut off by C-125 95-7 98-11 I'm going back the way I came 0-11 I turn R toward the exit $3 fee for day use 1-8 R into parking area 94-4! road ends at a clump of picnic tables, end of this part 41--1--0--12 I enter the trail [Sweetwater River Trail at mile 9] EB [change to 41-1-0-11 to match previous reading] 4-4 4-2 5-99 the dam begins to my L and there's also lake access to my left, but it's closed Tuesdays to Fridays this trail appears to be open, I continue 6-94 road to my R, apparently for lake access 5-87 4-84 barriers in the road SA, well-traveled road to my R, I turn R 1-84 1-79 other side of dam 41-0-59-74! this is a lake access road, locked gate and fence SA, I turn around, end of this part 0--81 [back at 1-79] I veered L here, but this time I go SA and around a chain across the road I'm going next to a chain link fence topped with barbed wire to my R 99-75 0-65 99-59 40-98-59-51 SA is fenced off, I turn L 11-51 8-52 11-51 11-39-"SRT MI 10" a sign for SRT MI 10 20-39 a sign for equestrian trail 21-34 23-32 41-33-59-32 interpretive bulletin board with no bulletins on it, trail turns R and narrows to a single track 36-25 obvious single track R, I continue SA 38-22 40-17 42-13 I begin some switchbacks 40-11 41-10 41-9 41-8 switchbacks end 42-7 41-4 41-2 41-41-59-0 obvious single track to my R, perhaps the other end of that single track 42-97 44-94 41-92 43-90 42-86 dry stream crossing 40-83 41-77 41-75 41-43-58-74-"SRT MI 11" 45-74 burned trees to my L on other side of wire fence with no barbs 48-74 49-74 dry stream crossing 50-74 51-73 trail splits, I take L branch 54-71 59-69 64-67 65-67 66-68 67-67 68-69 69-69 69-70 71-70 32 41.74 N 116 58.72 [41-74-58-72] W the picnic table and ramada, I stop to rest here, time now is 3:01 PM at 3:09 I continue directly away from the reservoir, looking for an alternate route back 74-70 76-66 77-64 74-60 41-72-58-59 side trails RL, I go SA 67-58! trail continues, but it's obvious that I should have turned R, I turn around back at the junction [41-72-58-59] I turn L 70-60 68-62 63-65 59-66 55-67 53-70 41--51--58--72 previously surveyed junction, end of this part [change to 41-51-58-73! to match previous reading] I stop calling lat/lon and go back the way I came 41-41-59-0 [matches previous reading] previously surveyed junction, I turn L [and take and alternate return route] 41-37-59-3 local high on this trail and stone cairns on both sides 35-6 33-9 I'm bypassing those switchbacks I take a picture of the switchbacks and the lake 33-11 41-32-59-15 road of sorts LR, scraggly little single track SA I turn R and go back to the main trail 32-16 41-36-59-25! [matches previous reading] previously surveyed junction, end of this part I go back the way I came without calling lat/lon back at the campground about 3:50 41-3-0-16 edge of campground, and I'm following a fairly good unpaved road to see where it goes 7-21-fork fork in road, both marked as trails, but L apparently goes to some houses or ranch buildings, I take the R fork 14-26 16-29 41-23-0-43 trails LR and SA road is marked as a trail, I go SA 23-44 short distance beyond, another single track R, I continue SA 41-26-0-49-"road L" road L marked as a trail I continue SA to go to the summit 28-52 29-52 31-52 side trail R, I go R 41-30-0-51! the summit, and some interpretive plaques, end of this part back on main trail, I turn R [31-52] 32-51 T intersection, I turn R 31-48-tank road ends next to water tank I continue on an obvious single track L of tank 32-46 31-44 29-44 23-44 previously surveyed junction, I turn L and then L again into another trail [the two L turns are too close together to be resolved on the map] 25-42 29-38 33-39 36-43 37-46 40-51 41-37-0-59 trail emerges on dirt road, probably the one I saw at the summit, I turn R 36-63 32-66 29-67 road turns sharp R, L is something resembling a trail going up toward the summit, I keep R 34-70 sharp L and there is a [new] yellow-top post, I think this is a real trail 28-69 33-72 29-71 32-74 25-74 41-22-0-74 I go through an open gate, there seems to be a smaller side trail to the R, just past that, to the R, is a golf course 15-69 C-125 L, golf course R, this is a pretty good dirt road [extension of Conduit Rd] slightly higher road to my L with a yellow-top post on it, I guess I'm not quite on the trail 4-61 I join a paved road, and there's a yellow-top post on it 40-82-0-55 familiar trail crossing, trail L is marked as closed, but I see a mountain biker coming down it, I turn L and go up the trail 85-51 81-48 this is a junction, I turn sharp L and go to a bridge over C-125 86-47 90-43! other side of bridge, the road veer to L, but there's a trail to the R which looks like the old Sweetwater River Trail it's getting pretty late 4:28, end of this part, I go back 40-81-0-48 [matched previous reading] L at previously surveyed junction 84-45 82-43 40-78-0-43 I approach some baseball fields, and I take what appears to be the fastest way out 74-42 71-39 I enter the parking lot and turn R onto its access road 69-49 L on Conduit Rd 61-47! R on San Miguel Rd, and I go back the way I came, end of this part 4:38 back at the truck, end of trip
