Survey of some trails on Mt. Woodson June 21, 2004 I'm going to survey an unexplored trail at Mt. Woodson. Setting out near CDF Fire Station on Highway 67 at 8:44 AM. I'm going up the access road. I reach the summit at 9:33. 33 0.56 N 116 58.43 W [0-56-58-43] Pavement ends, and I continue on a badly eroded dirt road. 55-44 Potato Chip Rock to my right. 54-46 Previously explored trail off to my right. I continue straight ahead. 54-48 54-49! Trail joins previously explored trail. End of this part. I turn back. I can find no other trail, so I return and go roughly west on the previously explored trail. 0-54-58-50 A smaller side trail to the left. I follow it. 53-52 53-54! This trail, too, joins the previously explored one. End of this part. I continue west. I am continuing down toward Lake Poway [on previously surveyed trail]. 0-42-59-27 I stop at the shade tree next to the trail. [52-37-"tree"!] 0-35-59-35 Another trailside tree. [45-45-"tree"!] East toward Warrne Canyon Trail. 0-23-59-46 One-mile marker for Mt. Woodson Trail. [33-56-"1.0 mile"!] 0-19-59-33 Left on Mt. Woodson Trail. 20-30 20-28 22-28 24-29 27-30-bench Bench beside trail. I stop to rest. 28-28 28-26 29-24 28-22 28-20 28-18-"1.5 mile" Mt. Woodson Trail 1.5 mile sign 28-16 26-15 25-15 25-13 25-11 Some of the trail back there was pretty narrow and faint, but I could follow it. Here the trail is wide, but heavily eroded. 25-8 26-4 27-1 27-97 28-96 28-93 30-91 30-92 32-93 34-94 34-95 36-95 38-96 The trail is rough, and going around some large boulders, but it's easy enough to follow. 39-97-"2.0 miles" 2.0 mile marker 40-96 41-97 42-95 43-97 44-96 45-95 47-96 0-47-58-96 Intersection of Fry Koegel Trail and trail to Woodson Peak. Time now is 11:13. This junction does not look familiar. I go to the left. 48-98! I think this is the main trail. I go back to that junction. Back at the junction [47-96], and I go the other way [toward the peak]. 48-95 49-94 Main trail is to my left and so close to this one that they may merge on the map. [This trail is mostly invisible from the main trail, but the sign at the previous junction should be visible through the chaparral. 50-92 50-90 50-87 50-85 0-51-58-83! Junction with previously surveyed trail, and I did not notice it before because it is unsigned and somebody put three rocks across it, which I have just removed. End of this part. I'm going east, back the way I came. 0-53-58-66 Fork in the trail. I take the right branch, which I have not yet surveyed. 53-64 53-62 I begin climbing up a rock. 53-61! I rejoin the main trail. End of this part. 0-53-58-54 Right on what appears to be another side trail. 53-53 53-52 54-51! I rejoin the main trail. End of this part. 11:49 The summit. I'm going to stop and rest for a while. 11:58 I start back down the access road. GPS odometer reads 0.3. GPS odometer 1.6 12:43 PM at entrance to fire station. South of the fire station, on the same side, is call box 67 181. It's about midway between this end of Woodson Rd. and the fire station entrance. [I drive on Archie Moore Rd. to survey the Fry Koegel Trail.] Fry Koegel Trail apparently continues along the side of Archie Moore Rd. as far as Paseo de las Brisas. I'm going to survey that portion in the GPS. Only four landmarks, number 4 at Highway 67. 1 01-13-57-20 2 01-09-57-20 3 00-84-57-19 4 00-76-57-18!
